Point of Interest

I have presented myself with a challenging task ... selling expensive diamonds to guys.
I recently watched the movie Bride Wars, and it features an engagement ring from Tiffany & Co., complete with the little blue box and white ribbon.
Well, that planted the idea in my head ... I like the rings, I like the boxes, I like the idea of engagements. So I decided to choose Tiffany engagement rings as my product and company to advertise. The research process was fun. First, I talked to guys about what would help them decide to buy a certain type of engagement ring. Their responses were quite comical. They wanted to shop somewhere that has good customer service because they said they are clueless when it comes to buying jewelry. They would buy a beautiful ring if it meant the girl they loved would marry them.
The next step in my "research" process was the most fun. I browsed Tiffany's website. I looked at a lot of pretty rings. For a very long time. And when I was done with that, I looked at more rings.
My challenge still remains. These rings are REEALLY expensive. As beautiful as they are, I would never ask for one. If I got one I wouldn't complain, but unless a lot of money was just lying around, a Tiffany ring is not my priority. So I need to figure out how to sell an item that is not practical. To people who may not have a lot of money sitting around. Maybe I should alter my target audience a little. Instead of guys age 18-35, the target is now rich young men, who are dating materialistic girls. Perfect.

Selling Points

So today's assignment posed a problem for me. Write a radio commercial for a sewing machine. How do I sell a sewing machine!? How do I sell anything exactly?

Since I'm sure I'm not the only person who has a difficult time with this, I searched for ideas from other people online. I came across this article that had some helpful Tips for writing successful commercial advertisements, written by Roger D. Bernier.

Hope this helps anyone else who could use some tips =)

Starting Point ...

Hello readers.

I'm Jaclyn Heck, and I'm starting this blog as an assignment for class, but also as a way to track my growth as a script writer. I'm 19 years old, majoring in Media Communication and minoring in Leadership. I love television production, and hope to be a news producer after I graduate.

Media Scriptwriting is a class that will help improve my writing for television and help me reach a level of competency to get a job in a few years. I think this class will be beneficial to me because of all the writing practice I'll get and the quickness I'll need to write at.

Coming up with a place to start is the hardest part of writing for me. I know what I want to say, but I can't always think of the best way to say it. My hesitancy is a hinderance to my writing. My goal is to just start writing immediately so a have a place to work from. I forget sometimes that I don't have to write in order. I get hung up on coming up with a great, creative, catchy lead-in and end up taking two or three times as long to finish my script than I would if I wrote everything I thought should be included first.

My goals for this semester are to become a quicker writer, a more conversational writer, and a more creative writer. Overall, I want to feel more confident in my writing.
